North American Aviation · Supersonic bomber research aircraft
HISTORICAL FIELD NOTE
Built to explore sustained Mach 3 flight at bomber scale, the XB-70 used six engines, a slender forward fuselage, folding wingtips, and compression lift beneath its delta wing. Only two were completed, but their flights produced valuable data on heating, structures, handling, and high-speed aerodynamics.

HISTORICAL FIELD NOTE
The conventional-runway F-35A combines low-observable shaping, sensor fusion, and internal weapons carriage with the lightest airframe and largest internal fuel load of the three F-35 variants. It entered U.S. Air Force operational service in 2016 and is designed for both air-to-air and precision-strike missions.
